Week of November 7, 2022 KPI Summary
  • This week, the industry experienced 7 ETF launches and 12 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 3.01 and total US ETFs to 3,060.
  • This past Friday November 11th, Americans celebrated Veterans Day to commemorate the service of all US military veterans. In a similar way, today’s KPI will acknowledge the ETF vets that have served our ecosystem the longest and are still open today.
    • The oldest 200 ETFs span from 1993 to 2006 and constitute approximately $3.3 Trillion, which is half of the total ETF assets.
      • Of the 200 ETFs, 111 are Traditional Index ETFs and comprise $2.4 Tn of the total $3.3 Tn. The oldest and largest is SPY, launched in 1993 and currently $375 Bn.
      • 83 are categorized as Non-Traditional in our Security Master accounting for $817 Bn. The third oldest and largest (in assets) is QQQ, launched in 1999 and currently $162 Bn.
      • Lastly, 6 are Active ETFs which make up $31 Bn. The largest, DFUV, is currently $8.3 Bn and is actually the 4th oldest of the 6.
    • The 200 ETFs are branded by 8 issuers with iShares having the most funds (100). The next two are State Street (34) and Invesco (33).
  • Once again, thank you to all of the service men and women that have served our wonderful country. And thank you to the ETF veterans who have set the early foundations of this innovative and dynamic industry.
  • The tracked indexes had similar positive experiences in the past week. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was up 8.58% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index trailed at 5.77%.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs

The team at Toroso Investments began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) in the early 2000's and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. The table above was the impetus for the creation of the TETF.Index, the index that tracks the ETF industry. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TEFT.Index.
