Week of May 9, 2022 KPI Summary
This week, the industry experienced 3 ETF launches and no closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 5.48 and total US ETFs to 2,931.
As we are halfway through the second quarter of 2022, let’s look at some of the KPIs from the past 3 months (data comparing 5/15/2022 to 2/13/2022).
Total assets decreased -7.18%, there was an increase of 80 ETFs to total US ETF count (2,931), and +2 additional issuers by brand.
From our 11 asset class categories, Currency increased the most (52.4%) with Managed Futures in second (48.0%). Volatility had the worst performance (-17.9%) with Preferred Stock close behind (-13.6%). The two largest asset classes of Equity (76.7% of assets) and Fixed Income (18.2%) dropped -8.91% and -1.43% respectively.
ETF expense ratio 12-month revenue sank from $12.06 Billion to $11.19 Billion.
Share of Revenue from Active ETFs actually rose from 10.7% to 11.4% compared to Non-traditional and Traditional ETFs.
Unsurprisingly, the open-to-close ratio rose again from 5.11 to 5.48.
A few categories had great performance in the past 3 months, but the industry overall has taken a huge hit with Equities dropping significantly. Despite a drop in assets and plateauing number of issuers of late, ETF listings continue to grow at a steady pace nearing the upcoming 3,000 ETFs milestone.
The tracked indexes had similar experiences in the last 3 months. The Toroso ETF Industry Index is down -18.21% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index leads at -16.11%.
